Know that they are the highest of all; O Nanak, they love the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The saints are helpers of the soul; they carry us across the frightening world-ocean.

Nanak says: know them as the highest of all; they love the Naam.

The highest people are the ones who love the Naam and help others across.
The deeper layer

Sant sahaa-ee — the saints as helpers, ferrying others across bhavjal (the world-ocean). Sabh tay oochay — reckoned the highest, not by rank or birth but by their love of the Name: greatness redefined as love, open to anyone.

A Question to Sit With
