Without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, one dies wandering around in confusion, performing all sorts of rituals.

O Nanak, all are bound by the attractive bonds of Maya, and the karmic record of past actions. ||1||

In plain words

Without the Sangat, people wander lost in confusion all their lives, busy with every kind of ritual, until they die.

Nanak says: everyone is tied by the soft, pretty ties of Maya, the pull of the world, and by what they have done before.

Being busy is not the same as finding your way.
The deeper layer

Saadhsangat bin — without the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One, the mind circles in bhram (confusion), piling up outward karam (acts, rituals) that do not quiet it. Komal bandhan — "soft, pretty bonds": the gentle-seeming attachments that hold us precisely because they feel pleasant. All through the Ruti, the way out is the Sangat.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you feel settled rather than scattered?
