Verse 16 of 74

Pretending to Sit Still

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
man kaa jhoothaa jhooth kamaavai.
The man of false mind practices falsehood.
maa-i-aa no firai tapaa sadaavai.
He runs after Maya, and yet pretends to be a man of disciplined meditation.
bharmay bhoolaa sabh tirath gahai.
Deluded by doubt, he visits all the sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
oh tapaa kaisay param gat lahai.
How can such a man of disciplined meditation attain the supreme status?
gur parsaadee ko sach kamaavai.
By Guru's Grace, one lives the Truth.
naanak so tapaa mokhantar paavai. ||1||
O Nanak, such a man of disciplined meditation attains liberation. ||1||

In plain words

Someone false inside acts falsely.

They chase after money and things, yet want to be called a person of deep discipline.

Lost in doubt, they visit every holy place.

How can someone like that reach the highest state?

By the Guru's grace, someone lives the Truth.

Nanak says: that person of discipline finds freedom.

Sitting still on the outside means nothing if you are chasing on the inside.
The deeper layer

False and true inner discipline stand side by side. The target is formalism, the outward performance of meditation while the mind runs after Maya, and it is aimed at a type, not a tradition, the same critique Gurbani levels at empty ritual everywhere. Pilgrimage cannot bridge the gap between show and substance. Only grace, and sach, truthful living, brings freedom.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you show calm on the outside that you do not feel inside?
