The Only Discipline That Counts

mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
so tapaa je ih tap ghaalay.
He alone is a man of disciplined meditation, who practices this self-discipline.
satgur no milai sabad samaalay.
Meeting with the True Guru, he contemplates the Word of the Shabad.
satgur kee sayvaa ih tap parvaan.
Serving the True Guru - this is the only acceptable disciplined meditation.
naanak so tapaa dargahi paavai maan. ||2||
O Nanak, such a man of disciplined meditation is honored in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The true person of discipline is the one who practices this discipline:

they meet the Guru and keep the Word close in their heart.

Serving the Guru is the discipline that is accepted.

Nanak says: such a person of discipline is honored in the One's court.

The discipline that counts is living the Word.
The deeper layer

Tap, austere discipline, moves away from bodily harshness and toward keeping the Shabad close and serving the True Guru, that is, living the teaching. Honor in the Court of the Lord means being honored where it matters most, by the One, rather than winning any outward reward.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you could live instead of just admire?
