Light in the Heart, Darkness Gone

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:
ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਵਰਤਣਿ ॥
raat dinas upaa-i-an sansaar kee vartan.
He created the night and the day, for the activities of the world.
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੇਰੁ ਬਿਨਾਸਣਿ ॥
gurmatee ghat chaannaa aanayr binaasan.
Following the Guru's Teachings, one's heart is illumined, and the darkness is dispelled.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਵਣਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਿ ॥
hukmay hee sabh saajee-an ravi-aa sabh van tarin.
By the Hukam of His Command, He creates everything; He pervades and permeates all the woods and meadows.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਣਿ ॥
sabh kichh aapay aap hai gurmukh sadaa har bhan.
He Himself is everything; the Gurmukh constantly chants the Lord's Name.
ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੫॥
sabday hee sojhee pa-ee sachai aap bujhaa-ee. ||5||
Through the Shabad, understanding comes; the True Lord Himself inspires us to understand. ||5||

In plain words

The One made night and day for the work of the world.

Through the Guru's teaching, a light comes on in the heart, and the darkness goes away.

In the flow of existence the One made everything, and fills every wood and meadow.

The One is everything. The one who follows the Guru speaks the One's Naam always.

Through the Word, understanding comes. The True One gives that understanding.

Follow the teaching and a light comes on inside that no darkness outside can reach.
The deeper layer

Night and day are made for the world's activity; inwardly, following the Guru lights the heart and clears away not-knowing. Hukam creates and then fills all nature, the woods and meadows, and the One is everything. Even understanding stays inside grace: the True One inspires it.
