With Every Breath

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ॥

Cursed is the life in this world, without the True Name.

God is the Great Giver of givers. His wealth is permanent and unchanging.

That humble being is immaculate, who worships the Lord with each and every breath.
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਅਗਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕੁ ਭਨੁ ॥
antarjaamee agam rasnaa ayk bhan.
With your tongue, vibrate the One Inaccessible Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥
rav rahi-aa sarbatar naanak bal jaa-ee. ||20||
He is all-pervading everywhere. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||20||

In plain words

Without the True Name, life in this world is empty and wasted.

The One is the Giver of all givers, and those gifts never wear away.

Spotless is the person who remembers the One with each and every breath.

With your tongue, speak of the One beyond reach, who knows every heart from inside.

The One fills everything, everywhere; Nanak gives himself to that One.

Remembering the One with every breath keeps a life from ever feeling hollow.
The deeper layer

Remember the One with every breath, and life fills up.

The verse begins by saying how empty life feels without the True Name. Then it turns to the Giver. Prabh daataa daataar means "the One is the Giver of all givers." Nihchal ayhu dhan: this wealth never wears away.

Saas saas aaraadhay nirmal so-ay jan means "spotless is the one who remembers with each breath." Think of how you breathe all day without trying. Remembering the One can become that natural, quietly there in every moment.

The One is antarjaamee, the One who knows every heart from the inside. The One is agam, beyond reach, and yet fills every place. Naanak bal jaa-ee means "Nanak gives himself to that One," with full love.

A Question to Sit With

What could you gently return to with each breath through a hard day?
