In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Just as I had heard the True Guru described, that is how I found the Guru to be.

The Guru brings those who were separated back to the One, and speaks for us in the One's court.

The Guru plants the Naam deep inside me like a sacred word, and heals the sickness of ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self).

Nanak says: they meet the True Guru whose meeting was written from the very beginning.

The Guru heals the feeling of being separate.
The deeper layer

The True Guru reunites the separated (vichhurhi-aa maylay) and heals the illness of egotism (haumai) — the feeling of being cut off from everything. Jaisaa satgur suneedaa taiso hee mai deeth: heard, then seen — deep listening that lands in direct recognition. The meeting itself is received as grace, not earned.

This shalok of Guru Arjan opens the whole Vaar, and its picture of the Guru as the one who brings the separated home runs through everything that follows.

A Question to Sit With

When have you heard something was good, and then found out for yourself that it was true?
