One Friend Makes the Whole World Friendly

mehlaa 5.
Fifth Mehl:
ik sajan sabh sajnaa ik vairee sabh vaad.
If the One Lord is my Friend, then all are my friends. If the One Lord is my enemy, then all fight with me.
gur poorai daykhaali-aa vin naavai sabh baad.
The Perfect Guru has shown me that, without the Name, everything is useless.
saakat durjan bharmi-aa jo lagay doojai saad.
The faithless cynics and the evil people wander in reincarnation; they are attached to other tastes.
jan naanak har parabh bujhi-aa gur satgur kai parsaad. ||2||
Servant Nanak has realized the Lord God, by the Grace of the Guru, the True Guru. ||2||

In plain words

When the One is my Friend, everyone is my friend. When the One is against me, everyone quarrels with me.

The perfect Guru has shown me that without the Naam, everything is wasted.

Those who turn away from the One, and those who do harm, keep wandering round and round, hooked on other tastes.

Nanak says: I, Your servant, have come to know the One, by the grace of the Guru, the True Guru.

Make friends with the One, and the whole world grows friendlier.
The deeper layer

One relationship reorders every other. The saakat — those who turn away from the One — chase flavor after flavor (doojai saad, "other tastes") and never settle; the warning is about where that chasing leads, not contempt for people. Nanak comes to know the One by the grace of the Guru: the seeing is given, not achieved.

A Question to Sit With

How does the world look different on a day you feel connected versus a day you feel alone?
