Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
habh gun taiday naanak jee-o mai koo thee-ay mai nirgun tay ki-aa hovai.
All virtues are Yours, Dear Lord; You bestow them upon us. I am unworthy - what can I achieve, O Nanak?
ta-o jayvad daataar na ko-ee jaachak sadaa jaachovai. ||1||
There is no other Giver as great as You. I am a beggar; I beg from You forever. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak says: every good quality is Yours, dear One, and You give it to me. Without You I have none; what could I do on my own?
There is no Giver as great as You. I come asking, and I ask of You always.
The best things about you were given — and that is something to be grateful for, not ashamed of.
Every good quality belongs to the One and is given, not achieved. The one who asks (jaachak) is not shamed: the picture is of open hands ready to receive. Before the greatest Giver, whose giving never ends, coming with empty hands is simply how things are for all of us.
A Question to Sit With
What good quality in yourself did you learn from someone else?
