Collecting the Wrong Things

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਏ ਸੰਪੈ ਮੋ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
kaam kroDh maa-i-aa mad matsar ay sampai mo maahee.
Sexual desire, anger, the wine of Maya, and envy - these are what I collect within myself.
ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਏ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੪॥
da-i-aa Dharam ar gur kee sayvaa ay supnantar naahee. ||4||
Compassion, righteousness, and service to the Guru - these do not visit me, even in my dreams. ||4||

In plain words

Craving, anger, the dizzy pull of wanting more, and jealousy —

these are what I have been gathering up inside.

Kindness, fairness, and serving the Guru —

they do not visit me, not even in my dreams.

It is worth noticing what you have been collecting inside — and making room for better.
The deeper layer

What you have been storing up inside is worth a look.

Kabir looks inside himself the way you might empty out your backpack. Sampai means what you have gathered and stored. On his list are craving, anger, the dizzy pride that money and things can bring, and envy. These, he says, are what I have been collecting.

Then he looks for the good things: kindness, doing what is right, and serving the Guru. Ay supnantar naahee — they do not show up, not even in my dreams.

That sounds sad, but it is a first step. The gap between the two lists is exactly what turning toward the One is meant to close. First you notice what you have been carrying. Then you can make room for something better.

A Question to Sit With

If your heart were a shelf, what have you been putting on it lately?
