Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 14
Verse 2 of 6

Whoever Hears It, Whoever Says It

ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਬੋਲਾਇ ॥
raam jan gurmat raam bolaa-ay.
O humble servant of the Lord, follow the Guru's Teachings, and chant the Name of the Lord.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਹਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo jo sunai kahai so muktaa raam japat sohaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whoever hears and speaks it is liberated; chanting the Lord's Name, one is embellished with beauty. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O servant of the One, follow the Guru's teaching and speak the Naam of the One.

Whoever hears it, whoever speaks it, is set free. Chanting the Naam, a person becomes beautiful.

Both hearing and speaking the Name set a person free.
The deeper layer

Hearing (sunai) and speaking (kahai) the Name are both doorways to freedom (muktaa). Sohaa-ay means to become beautiful, graced — the Name works on a person the way light works on a face.
