Verse 4 of 6

Some Read One Book, Some Another

ਕੋਈ ਪੜੈ ਬੇਦ ਕੋਈ ਕਤੇਬ ॥
ko-ee parhai bayd ko-ee katayb.
Some read the Vedas, and some the Koran.
ਕੋਈ ਓਢੈ ਨੀਲ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਪੇਦ ॥੩॥
ko-ee odhai neel ko-ee supayd. ||3||
Some wear blue robes, and some wear white. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some read the Vedas, and some read the Quran.

Some wear blue robes, and some wear white.

The books and the robes may differ; the heart's search is shared.
The deeper layer

Different books and different robes are outer differences around one search.

Ko-ee parhai bayd ko-ee katayb — some read the bayd, the Vedas, and some the katayb, the Quran. Ko-ee odhai neel ko-ee supayd — some wear blue robes, and some wear white. Holy people of different paths wore different colors.

These stand for all the outward differences between traditions. Guru Arjan names them without ranking any above another. Think of houses on one street, each painted a different color. Inside each one, a family sits down to dinner. The outsides differ. The search inside is one.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how different traditions can be reaching for something similar?
