Some Call Themselves This, Some That

ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ਤੁਰਕੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ਹਿੰਦੂ ॥
ko-ee kahai turak ko-ee kahai hindoo.
Some call themselves Muslim, and some call themselves Hindu.
ਕੋਈ ਬਾਛੈ ਭਿਸਤੁ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਰਗਿੰਦੂ ॥੪॥
ko-ee baachhai bhisat ko-ee surgindoo. ||4||
Some yearn for paradise, and others long for heaven. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some call themselves Muslim, and some call themselves Hindu.

Some long for paradise, and others long for heaven.

Under all the labels, the same hope beats in every heart.
The deeper layer

People call themselves by different names and hope for different heavens, and the longing is shared.

Ko-ee kahai turak ko-ee kahai hindoo — some call themselves Muslim, some call themselves Hindu. Turak was a common word for a Muslim in that time. Ko-ee baachhai bhisat ko-ee surgindoo — some hope for bhisat, the Muslim paradise, and some for surgindoo, the Hindu heaven.

These hopes are named side by side, as equals. The labels differ. The pictures of heaven differ. Think of two children each wishing for a different birthday cake. The flavors are different. The wish to be happy and loved is the same. The yearning that drives them is shared.

A Question to Sit With

What do you think most people, whatever they believe, are hoping for?
