Verse 4 of 5

Everything Already Belongs to You

ਕਿਆ ਦੇਵਉ ਜਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
ki-aa dayva-o jaa sabh kichh tayraa.
What can I offer You, Lord? Everything belongs to You.
ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿ ਜਾਉ ਲਖ ਬੇਰਾ ॥
sad balihaar jaa-o lakh bayraa.
I am forever a sacrifice to You, hundreds of thousands of times.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥
tan man jee-o pind day saaji-aa.
You blessed me, and fashioned my body, mind and soul.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨੀਚੁ ਨਿਵਾਜਿਆ ॥੩॥
gur kirpaa tay neech nivaaji-aa. ||3||
By Guru's Grace, this lowly being was exalted. ||3||

In plain words

What could I ever give You, when everything I have already came from You?

Again and again, a hundred thousand times, I give myself to You.

You shaped my body, my mind, my very self.

By the Guru's grace, I, so small, have been lifted up and honored.

Grace lifts up even the ones the world overlooks.
The deeper layer

What can I give You, when everything is already Yours?

Ki-aa dayva-o jaa sabh kichh tayraa — what could I offer, when all of it belongs to You? It is like a child buying a present for a parent with money the parent gave them. The gift still matters. But it all came from the parent first.

The One shaped body, mind and self. And by the Guru's kindness, neech nivaaji-aa — the lowly one was lifted up. Neech means small or overlooked. So our worth is a gift. It does not come from rank or status.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever seen someone "small" or overlooked be treated as important?
