Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 32
Verse 5 of 5

The Curtain Falls, You Appear

ਖੋਲਿ ਕਿਵਾਰਾ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
khol kivaaraa mahal bulaa-i-aa.
Opening the door, You summoned me to the Mansion of Your Presence.
ਜੈਸਾ ਸਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ॥
jaisaa saa taisaa dikhlaa-i-aa.
As You are, so You have revealed Yourself to me.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੁ ਪੜਦਾ ਤੂਟਾ ॥
kaho naanak sabh parh-daa tootaa.
Says Nanak, the screen is totally torn away;
ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੪॥
ha-o tayraa too mai man voothaa. ||4||3||14||
I am Yours, and You are enshrined within my mind. ||4||3||14||

In plain words

Opening the door, You called me into Your home.

Just as You are, so You showed Yourself to me.

Nanak says: the curtain is torn away completely.

I am Yours, and You live in my heart.

When the curtain falls, you find the One was right inside you.
The deeper layer

When the curtain falls, the One is right there, living in your heart.

Khol kivaaraa mahal bulaa-i-aa — You opened the door and called me into Your home. Then the One is seen just as the One is.

Sabh parh-daa tootaa — the whole curtain is torn away. The curtain is haumai, the me-first feeling that makes us feel apart from the One. When it falls, the last line says ha-o tayraa — I am Yours, and You live in my heart.

Think of a stage before a show. The curtain hides everything. When it opens, you see that the whole scene was right there all along.

A Question to Sit With

What's a "curtain" that sometimes hides what's good and real from you?
