Verse 3 of 5

The Guru and the One Are One

kar kirpaa raakhi-o gur sarnaa.
In His Mercy, the Guru has kept me under His protection.
gur pakraa-ay har kay charnaa.
The Guru has attached me to the Lord's Feet.
bees bisu-ay jaa man thehraanay.
When the mind is totally held in check,
gur paarbarahm aikai hee jaanay. ||2||
one sees the Guru and the Supreme Lord God as one and the same. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In kindness, the Guru has kept me safe in the Guru's shelter.

The Guru has joined me to the One's feet.

When the mind is held completely still,

you see the Guru and the Supreme One as one and the same.

When your mind grows still, you see the Guru and the One as one.
The deeper layer

Raakhi-o gur sarnaa — kept in the Guru's shelter, joined to the One's feet. Bees bisu-ay jaa man thehraanay — when the mind is wholly stilled ("twenty out of twenty"), gur paarbarahm aikai hee jaanay — one sees the Guru and the Supreme One as a single reality.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your restless mind grow still?
