Verse 1 of 5

Reading The Words, Living Them Too

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੜਤਾ ਟੀਕਾ ਸਹਿਤ ॥
mukh tay parh-taa teekaa sahit.
You read the scriptures, and the commentaries,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਹਤ ॥
hirdai raam nahee pooran rahat.
but the Perfect Lord does not dwell in your heart.
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਲੋਕ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
updays karay kar lok darirh-aavai.
You preach to others to have faith,
ਅਪਨਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
apnaa kahi-aa aap na kamaavai. ||1||
but you do not practice what you preach. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You read the holy books aloud, with all the notes written beside them,

but the Perfect One does not live in your heart.

You preach to others and press them to believe,

but you do not do what you say yourself.

Knowing the words is not the same as living them.
The deeper layer

Reading and teaching are good gifts; what matters is that the One lives in your heart and your life matches your words.

Mukh tay parh-taa teekaa sahit — reading aloud, commentary and all: all the tools of learning. Scripture itself is honored here. The gap being closed is the one between reciting a truth and living it — knowing about the One versus living from the One. This is Sach: not just true words, but truthful living.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you already know is right that you could start doing?
