Verse 4 of 5

Nothing Goes Along But This

bharam bhoolay baad ahaNkaaree.
The egotistical people are deluded by useless doubt.
sang naahee ray sagal pasaaree.
Of all this expanse, nothing shall go along with you.
sog harakh meh dayh birDhaanee.
Through pleasure and pain, the body is growing old.
saakat iv hee karat bihaanee. ||3||
Doing these things, the faithless cynics are passing their lives. ||3||

In plain words

Puffed up with pride, people wander lost in useless doubt.

Out of all this spread-out world, not one thing goes along with you.

Through sad times and happy times, the body grows older.

People cut off from the One spend their whole lives this way.

Nothing you own follows you onward — so hold it lightly.
The deeper layer

Bharam bhoolay, wandering in doubt, and ahankaaree, swollen with ego: that is the drift. Saakat means one turned away from the Source. It names a way of living, not a kind of person, and a way of living can change.

A Question to Sit With

If you couldn't take your stuff with you, what would you most want to have become?
