Verse 1 of 5

Whatever Comes, I Can Meet It

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
jo kichh karai so-ee sukh jaanaa.
Whatever He does makes me happy.
ਮਨੁ ਅਸਮਝੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਤੀਆਨਾ ॥
man asmajh saaDhsang patee-aanaa.
The ignorant mind is encouraged, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਡੋਲਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਠਹਰਾਇਆ ॥
dolan tay chookaa thehraa-i-aa.
Now, it does not waver at all; it has become stable and steady.
ਸਤਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਲੇ ਸਤਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sat maahi lay sat samaa-i-aa. ||1||
Receiving Truth, it is merged in the True Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whatever the One does, I take as happiness.

My mind, which did not understand, found trust in the Sangat.

It has stopped wobbling and grown steady.

Taking in what is true, it has melted into the One who is true.

Steadiness is learning to meet whatever comes as workable.
The deeper layer

Jo kichh karai so-ee sukh jaanaa: whatever the One does, I take as well-being. That is the poise of sahaj, ease that has stopped fighting what is. The mind moves from asmajh, confusion, to thehraa-i-aa, steadiness, in the Sangat (saadhsang), people gathered together to remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady when something unexpected happens?
