Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 52
Verse 3 of 5

Where Pain and Darkness Go

ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
jap jap jeevaa tayraa naa-o.
Chanting, meditating on Your Name, I live,
ਆਗੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਉ ਠਾਉ ॥
aagai dargeh paava-o thaa-o.
and hereafter, I will obtain a seat in the Court of the Lord.
ਦੂਖੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
dookh anDhayraa man tay jaa-ay.
Pain and darkness are gone from my mind;
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਰਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
durmat binsai raachai har naa-ay. ||2||
my evil-mindedness is dispelled, and I am absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chanting Your Name again and again, I live.

In the world to come, I will find a place in Your Court.

Pain and darkness leave my mind.

The crooked, unkind thoughts fade, and I am absorbed in Your Name.

Fill your mind with what is good, and the darkness has nowhere to sit.
The deeper layer

Jap jap jeevaa — remembering, I live. Dookh andhayraa man tay jaa-ay: pain and darkness leave the mind. Durmat binsai — the crooked or unkind mind dissolves, replaced by absorption (raachai) in the Name. Not a battle against bad thoughts, but being filled until there is no room for them.

A Question to Sit With

What thought, when you hold it, makes you feel most alive?
