This is the essence of true devotional worship.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

When the True Guru becomes merciful,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੪॥੨੮॥੩੯॥
naanak daas nihaal. ||4||28||39||
slave Nanak is enraptured. ||4||28||39||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Repeat the Guru's word as your chant.

This is the very heart of devotion.

When the True Guru is kind,

Nanak says: I, the servant, am filled with joy.

The heart of devotion is simply keeping good words close and living them.
The deeper layer

Gur kaa bachan jap mant — keep the Guru’s word as your mantra. Ehaa bhagat saar tat: this is the essence of devotion. Devotion here is not spectacle but the quiet keeping of the teaching in the heart. Nihaal: overflowing joy, received when the Guru is da-i-aal (kind).
