Verse 4 of 5

The Highest Deed of All

sabh tay ootam ih karam.
This is the most exalted deed.
sagal Dharam meh saraysat Dharam.
Of all faiths, this is the most sublime and excellent faith.
har simran tayraa ho-ay uDhaar.
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, you shall be saved.
janam janam kaa utrai bhaar. ||3||
You shall be rid of the burden of countless incarnations. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Of everything a person can do, this is the finest.

Of all the paths of faith, this is the finest path.

Remembering the One, you are saved.

And the weight of countless lifetimes comes off you.

The highest thing you can do is also the simplest: remember the One.
The deeper layer

Sabh tay ootam ih karam — the highest deed. Sagal dharam meh saraysat dharam: the best of all dharams (ways of living rightly). Remembrance stands above every ritual system — what matters is not which religion but the living heart of remembrance in any of them.

A Question to Sit With

What is the most worthwhile thing you did all week?
