Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing is of any use at all. Crying out, 'Mine, mine', a great many have departed, regretfully repenting. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why do you wander, lost in doubt, foolish one?

Without the Naam, nothing is of any use at all.

Crying 'mine, mine,' so many have gone on their way full of regret.

Grasping at 'mine, mine' leaves regret; the Naam is what helps.
The deeper layer

Grabbing at mine, mine leaves only regret. The trap is the grabbing, never the person.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Kaahay bharam bharmeh bigaanay — why do you wander in doubt, you who have lost your way? Mayraa mayraa kar bahut pachhutaanay: crying mine, mine, many have left with regret.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you hold too tightly that you could loosen your grip on?
