The Muslim God Allah and the Hindu God Paarbrahm are one and the same. ||5||34||45||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind and gentle with me, O Maker.

Fill me with devotion and quiet remembrance, O One who shaped us.

Nanak says: the Guru has cleared away my confusion —

Allah, as Muslims call the One, and Paarbrahm, as Hindus call the One, are one and the same.

The One that different faiths reach for is, in the end, a single One.
The deeper layer

Eko alhu paarbarahm: Allah and Paarbrahm are one and the same. The doubt the Guru clears away (gur kho-ay bharam) is the idea that these are different Gods.

Everything before this line has lovingly braided the sacred names of Muslim and Hindu devotion, and here the braid is tied: one Creator, many ways of calling. The verse also asks for two gifts, kindness and bhagat bandagee, a heart that loves to remember.

A Question to Sit With

How does it change things to imagine that everyone is reaching for the same One?
