This is devotion to the Guru, to sing forever the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
gur kee surat nikat kar jaan.
This is contemplation upon the Guru, to know that the Lord is close at hand.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
gur kaa sabad sat kar maan. ||2||
Accept the Word of the Guru's Shabad as Truth. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Praising the Guru means repeating the One's Name.

Devotion to the Guru means always singing the One's goodness.

Thinking on the Guru means knowing the One is right here, close by.

Take the Guru's word, the Shabad, as true.

To contemplate is to remember that the One is always right here, close.
The deeper layer

Gur kee surat nikat kar jaan — the heart of contemplation is knowing the One is near (nikat), not far off in some heaven. Gur kaa sabad sat kar maan: accept the Guru’s shabad as true — mannai, the inner alignment that lives from the word rather than merely agreeing with it.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you remember that what matters most is near, not far away?
