Pleasure and Pain the Same

gur bachnee samsar sukh dookh.
Through the Word of the Guru's Teachings, look upon pleasure and pain as one and the same.
kaday na bi-aapai tarisnaa bhookh.
Hunger and thirst shall never afflict you.
man santokh sabad gur raajay.
The mind becomes content and satisfied through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
jap gobind parh-day sabh kaajay. ||3||
Meditate on the Lord of the Universe, and He will cover all your faults. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Through the Guru's word, good days and hard days weigh the same.

Restless hunger and wanting never get their grip on you.

Through the Guru's Shabad, the mind grows content and satisfied.

Remember the One, and it covers over every fault.

A settled heart meets good days and hard days with the same steadiness.
The deeper layer

Samsar sukh dookh — pleasure and pain held as equal: the poise of sahaj, unshaken by the swings of fortune. Man santokh: the contentment that makes the mind a raajaa (king), needing nothing. Parh-day sabh kaajay: the One covers every fault — a note of mercy, not scorekeeping.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady whether things go well or badly?
