Who Walks With You

raamkalee mehlaa 5.
Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
kis bharvaasai bichrahi bhavan.
What supports you in this world?
moorh mugaDh tayraa sangee kavan.
You ignorant fool, who is your companion?
raam sangee tis gat nahee jaaneh.
The Lord is your only companion; no one knows His condition.
panch batvaaray say meet kar maaneh. ||1||
You look upon the five thieves as your friends. ||1||

In plain words

What are you leaning on as you move through this world?

Foolish, careless one, who is your companion?

The One alone walks beside you, and no one knows how great the One is.

Yet you keep treating the five thieves — the inner pulls of anger, greed, attachment, pride, and craving — as your friends.

The One is the companion who stays; the five inner pulls only pretend to be friends.
The deeper layer

The One is the companion who stays: raam sangee. Panch batvaaray are the five thieves, the inner tendencies that quietly rob you while you mistake them for friends.

Moorh mugadh is a sharp wake-up call, "foolish, careless one," spoken to shake a person out of a daze.

A Question to Sit With

Which of your own habits acts like a friend but is quietly taking from you?
