In plain words

First comes the butter, and then the milk.

The dirt scrubs the soap clean.

The fearless one goes around afraid of fear.

What is alive is overcome by what has no life.

A good riddle isn't meant to be solved so much as to open your mind.
The deeper layer

The world can run backwards. A soul that has nothing to fear can spend its days afraid, and what is living and lasting can be pushed aside by things that have no life in them at all.

More upside-down riddles. Their job is to loosen the grip of ordinary logic so a deeper seeing can slip in. One common reading: the soul, fearless by nature, gets caught up in worry, and the busy pull of things that pass can crowd out the quiet life within.

A Question to Sit With

What is a riddle or puzzle that made you think in a whole new way?
