Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 74
Verse 3 of 5

The Master of the Masterless

jaa kai mastak raakhai haath.
One upon whom He places His Hand, is protected.
parabh mayro anaath ko naath.
My God is the Master of the masterless.
patit uDhaaran kirpaa niDhaan.
He is the Savior of sinners, the treasure of mercy.
sadaa sadaa jaa-ee-ai kurbaan. ||2||
Forever and ever, I am a sacrifice to Him. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever the One lays a hand upon is kept safe.

My One is the protector of those who have no one else — the friend of the friendless.

The One lifts up those who have stumbled, a whole treasure-house of mercy.

Again and again, I give my heart to the One in thanks.

The One reaches first for whoever feels they have no one.
The deeper layer

Anaath ko naath — the Master of the masterless, the one who belongs especially to those who feel they belong nowhere. Patit udhaaran — the lifter of the fallen. This is the tradition's tenderness toward the overlooked: the One reaches first for whoever has been left out.

A Question to Sit With

Who around you might need to feel that someone is in their corner?
