ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਹੋਵਤ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, one is enlightened,
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
charan kamal meh ho-ay nivaas. ||1||
and comes to dwell in His lotus feet. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As you sing the One's praises, a light comes on inside you,

and you find your home at the feet of the One.

The right song can switch on a light inside you.
The deeper layer

When you sing about the One, a light comes on inside you.

Gun gaavat hovat pargaas means that singing about the One's goodness brings pargaas, a light inside. The song is more than a pretty sound. It is like opening the curtains in a dark room. Everything inside gets brighter and clearer.

Then the heart settles charan kamal meh, at the One's "lotus feet." The lotus is a beautiful flower. Resting at someone's feet means feeling safe and close, like a little child sitting by a parent. The heart finds a place that feels like home.

A Question to Sit With

When has singing or music changed how you felt inside?
