O Nanak, he crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||1||57||

In plain words

In the Sangat, you are lifted up and kept safe.

Nanak says: you cross the wide, frightening sea of the world and reach the other side.

The Sangat carries you across what you couldn't cross alone.
The deeper layer

The Sangat helps carry us through life's rough waters.

Santsangat meh ho-ay udhaar means that in the Sangat we are lifted up and kept safe. The Sangat means people gathered together to remember the One.

Bhavjal utras paar means crossing the wide, stormy sea of life to the other side. Think of a school trip where everyone holds hands to cross a busy road. No one is left to cross alone.

Even in this tiny two-verse song, the same steady message comes through. You are not meant to make the crossing alone.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you get through things you couldn't get through by yourself?
