You must abandon your beauty, pleasures, fragrances and enjoyments; beguiled by gold and sexual desire, you must still leave Maya behind. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

One day you must let go of every lovely thing: the good looks, the treats, the sweet smells, the fun.

Fooled by gold and by desire,

you must still leave Maya, the glittering, passing show of the world, behind.

Enjoy the shine of the world, but know it isn't yours to keep.
The deeper layer

Every lovely thing we enjoy stays behind in the end.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. The shabad is a Partaal, a song that changes its beat as it goes, and it opens right on its pause line.

Roop rang suganDh bhog — beauty, color, sweet smells, pleasures. These are what the senses love. Ti-aag chalay — one day we leave them all. Maa-i-aa chhalay kanik kaaminee — we are fooled by Maya, by gold and by the pull of desire. Maya is the glittering, passing show of the world. It is seen clearly here: lovely, and short-lived.

Think of a sandcastle on a sunny beach. It is beautiful. You enjoy it. And then the tide takes it home.

A Question to Sit With

What is a treat you love that you know doesn't last very long?
