Riches That Stay Behind

ਭੰਡਾਰ ਦਰਬ ਅਰਬ ਖਰਬ ਪੇਖਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਧਾਰੈ ॥
bhandaar darab arab kharab paykh leelaa man saDhaarai.
You gaze upon billions and trillions of treasures and riches, which delight and comfort your mind,
ਨਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਗਾਮਨੀ ॥੧॥
nah sang gaamnee. ||1||
but these will not go along with you. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You can gaze at piles of treasure, riches beyond counting. They can please and comfort your mind for a while,

but not one coin of it comes with you.

The things that comfort you for a while are not the things that go with you.
The deeper layer

Great riches can comfort the mind for a while, but they do not come along with us.

Bhandaar darab arab kharab — storehouses of wealth, billions and trillions. Paykh leelaa man saDhaarai — seeing them, the mind feels soothed and steady. The comfort is real.

And yet, nah sang gaamnee — none of it goes along with you. Think of a toy you loved when you were small. It made you happy then. It stayed on the shelf as you grew up. Riches can give comfort. They cannot keep you company on the journey.

A Question to Sit With

What comforts you in a way that lasts longer than a new toy or treat?
