In plain words

You get tangled up with your children, your husband or wife, your brothers and sisters and friends; you are pulled in and fooled.

All of it passes, like the shade of a tree.

Nanak says: I seek the shelter of the One's lotus feet. In the love of the saints, I have found peace.

Love your people dearly — and rest your deepest peace in what doesn't move on.
The deeper layer

Family and friends are dear, like cool shade, and a lasting peace is found in the One.

Sut kaltar bharaat meet urajh pari-o — a person gets tangled up with children, spouse, brothers and friends. Ih birakh chhaamnee — these are like the shade of a tree. The shade is real and welcome. It also moves as the sun moves.

The verse honors love of family and simply sees clearly that everything changes. Then comes a warm turn. Charan kamal saran naanak — Nanak takes shelter at the One's lotus feet. There he finds sukh, a peace that stays, in sant bhaavnee, the faith and love of the saints.

Think of a picnic under a tree with people you love. Enjoy it fully. And know where your lasting home is.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, or who do you turn to, when you want a peace that stays?
