No One Leaves Empty-Handed

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
naanak birthaa ko-ay na ho-ay.
O Nanak, no one returns empty-handed;
ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aisee dargeh saachaa so-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
such is the Court of the True Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Nanak says: no one who comes to You ever walks away with empty hands.

Such is the Court of the True One.

At the One's door, no one is ever turned away empty-handed.
The deeper layer

No one who comes to the One leaves with empty hands.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Naanak birthaa ko-ay na ho-ay — no one goes away empty. The dargeh is the One's court, the true home. Giving is simply what it does.

Think of a grandmother's kitchen where no one ever leaves hungry. Saachaa so-ay, that True One, turns no one away.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to know you would always be welcomed somewhere?
