Glass Earrings, No Freedom

ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਫਟਕ ਬਨਾਈ ਕਾਨਿ ॥
mundraa fatak banaa-ee kaan.
You make ear-rings of glass to wear in your ears.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਗਿਆਨਿ ॥
mukat nahee bidi-aa bigi-aan.
But liberation does not come from learning without understanding.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਸਾਦਿ ਲੋੁਭਾਨਾ ॥
jihvaa indree saad lobhaanaa.
You are lured by the tastes of the tongue and sex organs.
ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਨਹੀ ਮਿਟੈ ਨੀਸਾਨਾ ॥੬॥
pasoo bha-ay nahee mitai neesaanaa. ||6||
You have become a beast; this sign cannot be erased. ||6||

In plain words

You wear earrings made of glass in your ears.

But freedom does not come from learning without understanding.

The tastes of the tongue and the cravings of the body pull you along. You have become like an animal led by hunger, and that mark does not wash off.

*Outer signs of holiness change nothing until something changes inside.*
The deeper layer

Special earrings and learning do not set you free. Understanding and self-control do.

Mundraa fatak are glass earrings. Yogis of a certain order wore large earrings as the mark of their group.

Mukat nahee bidi-aa bigi-aan means "freedom does not come from learning without understanding." Mukat means being free.

Jihvaa indree saad lobhaanaa means "lured by the tastes of the tongue and the body." Think of a student who memorizes every answer for a test but has not understood a thing. The grade may look good, but nothing inside has changed. The mark of the order cannot do the inner work for you.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between knowing about something and understanding it?
