Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 83
Verse 8 of 9

The One Who Contemplates Is the Yogi

ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਲੋਗਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਗਾ ॥
taribaDh logaa taribaDh jogaa.
The people of the world are entangled in the three modes; the Yogis are entangled in the three modes.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਸੋਗਾ ॥
sabad veechaarai chookas sogaa.
Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, sorrows are dispelled.
ਊਜਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
oojal saach so sabad ho-ay.
Through the Shabad, one becomes radiant, pure and truthful.
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥
jogee jugat veechaaray so-ay. ||7||
One who contemplates the true lifestyle is a Yogi. ||7||

In plain words

Ordinary people are tangled in the world's three pulls, and yogis are tangled in them too.

Think deeply on the Guru's Word, and sorrow ends.

Through the Word a person becomes bright, pure and true. The one who thinks about the true way to live is a yogi.

*A yogi is someone who thinks about the true way to live.*
The deeper layer

A yogi is the one who thinks deeply about the true way to live.

Tribadh logaa tribadh jogaa means "ordinary people are caught in the three pulls, and so are yogis." The three pulls are the gunas: laziness, restless striving, and calm goodness. No title makes anyone free of them.

Sabad veechaarai chookas sogaa means "reflecting on the Word, sorrow ends." Through the Word a person becomes oojal saach, bright and true.

Think of a team captain. The armband alone does not make someone a captain. How they care for the team does. In the same way, a yogi is not made by clothes or a name. Jogee jugat veechaaray so-ay means "the one who reflects on the true way of living is the yogi." That is open to anyone.

A Question to Sit With

If being “wise” is not about what you wear or your title, what is it about?
