Ask the One Who Knows the Way

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
satgur poochh sangat jan keejai.
Go, and ask the True Guru, and associate with the Lord's humble servants.
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
man har raachai nahee janam mareejai.
Your mind shall merge into the Lord, and you shall not be reincarnated to die again.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
raam naam bin ki-aa karam keejai. ||7||
Without the Lord's Name, what can anyone do? ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Go and ask the True Guru, and sit in the Sangat of the One's humble people.

Your mind will melt into the One, and you will not be born to die again.

Without the Naam, what can anyone do?

All the doing in the world means little without the Naam.
The deeper layer

Ask the True Guru and stay in the Sangat; a mind that rests in the One leaves the round of birth and death.

Satgur poochh means ask the True Guru. Sangat jan is the Sangat, people gathered together to remember the One. Nahee janam mareejai means the round of being born and dying ends when the mind raachai, rests and melts, in the One. Ki-aa karam keejai asks what any amount of doing is worth without the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

Who could you ask when you honestly do not know the way forward?
