Serve the Primal Lord, by chanting the Lord's Name.

O Nanak, God blesses us with His Name, when He grants His Grace. ||8||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Take the little mouse that scurries around inside you, the restless, nibbling mind, and set it down.

Serve the Primal One by chanting the Naam.

Nanak says: when the One is kind, the Naam is given.

Settle the restless mind; the Naam comes as a gift of grace.
The deeper layer

Settle the scurrying mind, serve the One, and the Naam comes as a gift of grace.

The oondar, the mouse, is a tender picture of the darting, nibbling mind. Dhur kee sayvaa means service to the Primal One, the Source of all. The last word is grace: naam milai kirpaa, the Naam is received when the One is kind.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you settle your own scurrying, restless thoughts?
