The woman is in the man, and the man is in the woman. Understand this, you who know the One!
Deep listening lives inside music, and knowing lives inside that listening. Turn toward the Guru, and speak the story that has no words.
The woman is in the man, and the man is in the woman. Deep down, people are far more alike than different.
Purakh meh naar naar meh purkhaa — the woman in the man, the man in the woman. Purakh means man and naar means woman. Each one carries something of the other. Every person has both gentleness and strength, both care and courage. Guru Nanak asks the brahm gi-aanee, the one who knows the One deeply, to understand this.
In Guru Nanak's time, men and women were often kept far apart and treated very differently. This line quietly pushes against that.
Dhun meh dhi-aan — deep focus lives inside music. Think of losing yourself in a song you love, until the world goes quiet. Dhi-aan meh jaani-aa — and knowing lives inside that focus. From there, the gurmukh can begin to speak the akath kahaanee, the story that has no words.
What is something people are often surprised to have in common?
