Verse 4 of 26

Desire Conquered, the One Kept Close

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
mansaa maar manai meh raakhai satgur sabad veechaaree. ||3||
He conquers desire, and enshrines the Lord within his mind; he contemplates the Word of the True Guru's Shabad. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Taming its restless wants, the heart keeps the One safe inside.

It thinks deeply on the Word of the True Guru.

When something better fills your heart, the endless wanting quiets on its own.
The deeper layer

When the One is kept close, craving loses its pull.

Mansaa maar manai meh raakhai — taming craving, the seeker keeps the One inside the mind. Mansaa is craving, the restless wanting that never stops. Satgur sabad veechaaree — they think about the Word of the True Guru.

Craving is not pushed down by force. It is outgrown. Think of a child who used to beg for a new toy every day. Once they find a good friend to play with, the toy just matters less. When the One is near, the old wants quietly fade.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing, when you focus on it, makes smaller wants fade away?
