The Horn of Awareness

ਸਿੰਙੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਵਾਜੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
sinyee surat anaahad vaajai ghat ghat jot tumaaree. ||4||
The horn of consciousness vibrates the unstruck sound current; Your Light illuminates each and every heart, Lord. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The horn of a wide-awake mind plays a music no hand strikes.

Your light shines in each and every heart.

The deepest music is a mind waking up.
The deeper layer

The truest horn a seeker can blow is a wide-awake mind.

Yogis, people who follow a path of meditation, carry a sinyee, a small horn they blow. Guru Nanak gives the horn a new meaning. Sinyee surat anaahad vaajai — the horn of awareness plays the unstruck music. Surat is awareness, paying close attention. Anaahad means unstruck, a music no hand makes.

Ghat ghat jot tumaaree — Your Light is in every single heart. The yogi blows a horn you can hold in your hand. Nanak says the truest horn is a mind that is awake. When it wakes up, it notices the same Light shining in everyone.

A Question to Sit With

When you go quiet and pay close attention, what do you start to notice?
