The Lamp of Five Elements

ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
panch tat mil ahinis deepak nirmal jot apaaree. ||6||
Bringing together the five elements, day and night, the Lord's lamp shines with the Immaculate Light of the Infinite. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the five elements of the body come together, a lamp is lit.

Day and night, it shines with a pure light that has no end.

Your ordinary body can hold a light far bigger than itself.
The deeper layer

Your own body, when it is in harmony, becomes a lamp for a Light with no end.

Panch tat mil — the five elements come together. The old teachers said everything is made of five elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. Your body is made of them too.

Deepak nirmal jot apaaree — a lamp shines with a pure Light that has no limit. Nirmal means spotless. Apaaree means without end. Think of a small clay lamp in a dark room. The lamp is plain clay and oil. But the light it gives fills the room. In the same way, an ordinary body can shine ahinis, day and night.

A Question to Sit With

What lets your own light shine a little brighter and steadier?
