sat santokh pat kar jholee jogee amrit naam bhugat paa-ee.
Make truth and contentment your plate and pouch, Yogi; take the Ambrosial Naam as your food.

Dhi-aan kaa kar dandaa jogee sinyee surat vajaa-ee. ||2||
Make meditation your walking stick, Yogi, and make higher consciousness the horn you blow. ||2||

In plain words

Yogi, let truth and being content be your bowl and your bag. Take the Naam, sweet as nectar, as your food.

Yogi, let steady meditation be the stick you lean on. Let a clear, awake mind be the horn you blow.

Fill your life with truth and contentment, and you are already fed.
The deeper layer

Each tool a wandering yogi carries can stand for something good inside.

Sat santokh pat kar jholee jogee — Yogi, make truth and contentment your plate and your bag. Santokh means contentment, being happy with what you have. Amrit naam bhugat paa-ee — take the amrit, the sweet nectar of the Name, as your food.

Dhi-aan kaa kar dandaa jogee — make dhi-aan, steady attention, your walking stick. Sinyee surat vajaa-ee — let surat, a wide-awake mind, be the horn you blow.

Think of packing a school bag. You could pack only snacks and toys. Or you could pack what helps you through the day. Guru Amar Das gives the yogi a new packing list.

A Question to Sit With

What are you “carrying” through your days — and is it feeding you?
