O saints, listen: the one who turns toward the Guru is given greatness, as a gift.
Santahu gurmukh day-ay vadi-aa-ee — dear friends, the gurmukh is given greatness. Santahu means "O saints," a warm way of calling everyone close. Vadi-aa-ee means greatness, honor.
The key word is day-ay: it is given. The gurmukh does not grab greatness or win it in a contest. It is handed over, like a medal placed around your neck by someone else.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the centre of the shabad, and it keeps the whole shabad resting on grace. The best things in a person are received as gifts, not earned like a paycheck.
What's the difference between greatness you earn and greatness that's given?
