Verse 2 of 22

Worship Is Keeping the Name

ਸੰਤਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
santahu gurmukh pooraa paa-ee.
O Saints, as Gurmukh, find the Perfect Lord,
ਨਾਮੋ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naamo pooj karaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and worship the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O saints, turn toward the Guru, and find the Perfect One.

Worship the Naam — keep the One close in your heart, and let that be your prayer.

Worship is keeping the Naam close.
The deeper layer

The gurmukh — one who faces toward the Guru — finds the pooraa (perfect, complete One), and poojaa, worship, is Naam itself: a Presence held in the heart, more than an object placed on an altar.

These lines are the rahau, the refrain at the shabad's centre.

A Question to Sit With

What does it look like to keep something in your heart, not just in your hands?
