Verse 6 of 22

Letting the Small Self Dissolve

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਏਹ ਪੂਜਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
sabad marai man nirmal santahu ayh poojaa thaa-ay paa-ee. ||5||
If someone dies in the Word of the Shabad, his mind become immaculate, O Saints; such worship is accepted and approved. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O saints, when the loud, grabbing self — the part that always says me first — dies away in the Word, the mind becomes spotless.

Worship like that is accepted.

Worship lands when the grabbing self grows quiet in the Word.
The deeper layer

Sabad marai literally means to die in the Word — a favorite image of Guru Amar Das. It is not about the body; it is the dissolving of the small, grasping ego so the mind becomes nirmal (spotless). This inner letting-go is the worship that is thaa-ay paa-ee — accepted, landed, real.

A Question to Sit With

What does it feel like when the me first voice inside you finally goes quiet?
