Knowing Your Own Self

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੮॥
gurmukh aap pachhaanai santahu raam naam liv laa-ee. ||8||
The Gurmukh understands his own self, O Saints; he lolvingly centers his mind on the Lord's Name. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O saints, the one who turns toward the Guru comes to know their own self.

They rest their mind, with love, on the Naam.

Knowing yourself and knowing the One turn out to be the same doorway.
The deeper layer

Gurmukh aap pachhaanai — self-knowledge as the doorway. To know your own self, in Gurbani, means discovering that your deepest self and the One are not separate, which is far from self-obsession. Out of that recognition, liv (loving attention) naturally settles on the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What is something true about yourself that took you a long time to see?
