Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 94
Verse 11 of 31

Praise That Empties the Ego

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਪੀ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥੧੦॥
har jee-o japee har jee-o saalaahee vichahu aap nivaaree. ||10||
I chant the Lord's Name, and praise my Dear Lord; egotism is eradicated from within me. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I chant the Name and I praise the Dear One.

And the puffed-up self is cleared out from inside me.

Filling the heart with the Name leaves the ego less room to grow.
The deeper layer

Japee... saalaahee... vichahu aap nivaaree — chanting and praising, the aap (self-conceit) is removed from within. Remembrance is not shown here as duty but as a natural cure: fill the heart with the Name and the crowded ego has nowhere left to stand.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing, when you focus on it, makes your worries feel smaller?
