ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ॥੧੭॥
jo Dhur likhi-aa so-ee paa-i-aa mil har sabad savaaree. ||17||
We obtain only that which is pre-ordained; receiving the Lord's Shabad, we are embellished. ||17||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
We each receive what was set down for us long before, from the very beginning.
And meeting the teaching, we are made beautiful — the way a rough stone is polished until it shines.
Your life is held within a larger pattern, and the teaching makes it shine.
Jo dhur likhi-aa so-ee paa-i-aa — what is written from the beginning (dhur) is received. This is not cold fate but deep trust: your life is held within a larger pattern. And mil har sabad savaaree — meeting the Word, you are adorned. The pattern includes your becoming beautiful.
